The story is rather short but the core message is that there are many things in this multiverse that we have not yet learned to read/interpret... I recently finished reading His Dark Materials so definitely had to find out what Lyra (and Pan) has been up to in her own Oxford... I highly recommend this small hard bound packaging of the book, complete with a map for Lyra's Oxford! Love it!I am planning to start reading The Book of Dust soon!

Do not buy this in kindle... It is a waste of $6.99. It a short beginning of a story that is over before it really goes anywhere. It is cute, but I was expecting a book... I thought I had accidentally downloaded the book sample... Then realized that was all there was. Big rip-off!
Pay attention to the description. This is a tiny, short book. Not much of a story. Directed to a younger audience than the Dark Matter trilogy.
Giving just a taste of the former glory that was the His Dark Materials Trilogy, Pullman unfortunately disappoints the reader with this near-gimmick of a short story. Taking up space with what should have been words are (albeit charming) black prints depicting some of the scenes described, as well as (again, albeit charming) postcards and maps that have the ability of confusing the reader. Luckily, the actual story line is decent, and whilst in the middle of it, found myself getting pulled right back into the fantasy world he created. The ending hints at something more to come, and the entire tone of the piece is quite suspicious, as if the clever author had something hiding up his proverbial sleeve. The descriptions lacked the luster of his previous work, and one finds themselves wishing for the insanely visual imagery that he is known for. The characters were a bit flat, but the story still gripped. We all know Pullman is capable of so much more - so why this interlude?
I had just finished reading (nay, devouring!) the His Dark Materials trilogy, and thought it was excellent. When I was looking for more from Pullman, the first thing I spotted was Lyra's Oxford, so I decided to get it. Unfortunately, I didn't read the item description closely enough -- I had not realized that this was only a booklet, and not a book. As such, it is outrageously overpriced, even had it been a good read -- and it is not. No spoilers here, but I can tell you that this is a very brief and uninteresting vignette from Lyra's life after the close of the original trilogy. We learn nothing new about the world, the character is not developed any further, and there is essentially no plot; just the recounting of an at best mildly interesting incident.
This is forty pages of large-print text, and a couple of worthless "extras" inserted. That's less than a typical chapter of Pullman's original trilogy. Even the slowest of readers (that would be me) will be done with this in under an hour, and probably never give it a second thought. And although I don't know him personally, I'd guess that Pullman probably put about as much time and effort into writing it as I put into reading it. In short -- you are throwing away your money if you purchase this booklet; I did not look at it closely enough, and have no one to blame but myself. So here's fair warning to any others who might be tempted to make the same mistake I did.
Well I am completely amazed at this book, smaller than I thought but great condition and the map blew my mind ❤️❤️❤️
I just recently started and finished the "His Dark Materials" series. I went through all 3 books in quick succession because I enjoyed them so much. When I heard there was additional content, I bought this and "One Upon a Time in the North" immediately. I have yet to read "Once Upon a Time in the North", but I finished "Lyra's Oxford" in one sitting. It is extremely short. Nothing new or particularly interesting is revealed. With all that said, this edition of the book is filled with interesting little inserts that provide nice little glimpses into the universe that Philip Pullman has created and I am thankful for any window back into it that I can get. Even though it is a small/short book, it is nicely made and I'm glad to have it on my bookshelf.
Pros Nice presentation, another chance to spend time with Lyra and Pan
Cons Too short, not very impactful or interesting beyond confirming that Lyra is flourishing after the events of the previous books.
"Lyra's Oxford" represented the glimmer of hope within my depressed and hungry mind following the completion of "The Amber Spyglass." With great respect for Mr. Pullman's writing ability as shown in his previous three books of the "His Dark Materials" saga I thought that he would do what many great authors have done in the past and end the series after the sad but understandable conclusion to Lyra and Will's quest in "The Amber Spyglass." That early judgment was dashed when I happened to discover that Mr. Pullman is indeed continuing the story but through a number of companion novels which have and will continue to be written and released as time goes on. With my spirits raised and my mind hungry I quickly dove into "Lyra's" Oxford without a moment's hesitation.
The Short Story within the book titled "Lyra and the Birds" takes place two years after the conclusion of the events in "The Amber Spyglass" and details the efforts of a now older Lyra to help a lost witch's daemon find its way back to its host. What the story lacks in length it makes up for in the same action oriented, informative storytelling which made the original trilogy so appealing. With a map of Lyra's alternate Oxford, and other clues pointing to the possible future of the characters the author Philip Pullman has never ceased to amaze me with his allegiance to the series and to his many fans.
The only problem I encountered is that the version does not display the map in a manner which much detail can be composed of in a knowledgeable manner. Unless you have a DX or don't mind a squished indistinguishable map I would get this wonderful read as a printed book.
