This middle-grade fantasy adventure starts off pretty predictably. Heroine Annie, an orphan, escapes in the dead of night from the clutches of her evil guardians and dashes into the scary dark woods in the company of her two empathetic cats. Surely, while avoiding the feared "kinderstalk", Annie will meet a variety of characters and have magical woodsy adventures.

Well, sort of. The book is much more ambitious than just that.

This is one of those books in which every little detail will circle back and become important later. Every character is really at least three different characters, and every few pages Mr. "X" turns out to really be "Z" disguised as "Y". Probably the least interesting aspect of the book is "The Darkwood", which is mostly just a dark wood. But everything else is fluid.

If you know that going in, and if you are willing to roll with the punches, this book, with its hits and misses and occasional head-scratchers, is great fun. It is well-written, both in the sense that grammar, vocabulary and the like are fine and in the sense that scenes are well set, characters are well sketched, and the whole thing is put together reasonably well.

That said, no character is particularly deep, (which is fine by me in a middle grade fantasy adventure). Some plot developments have an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink feel, (which is fine if you like your books loaded with stuff and don't mind loose ends). There is a lot of exposition, explaining, monologuing and overheard conversations that resolve questions, but that's fine in a middle grade book in which you want the young reader to follow what's going on.

The upshot for me is that I thought that this book wasn't very, for want of a better term, elegant, but it was brisk, ripping and fun, with just enough atmosphere and brooding moodiness to give it a little heft. A nice, entertaining find.

If you enjoyed Hunger Games, then you'll for sure enjoy "Darkwood". Perhaps even more. This should go to directly to Hollywood.
I just finished Darkwood. Got it yesterday morning, and frankly had trouble staying away from it, even to work, even to sleep. It is a wonderful book. As close in quality as I've found to my favorites, Charles de Lint and Orson Scott Card. No gimmicks, credible, nuanced characters, and the first layer of an onion of a world. I can't wait for more. Congratulations. Well done.
Can not wait for the second book! I read it. And then both of my tern daughters read it. The anticipation for the next book is exciting for us. Start writing that screenplay too! This would make a great movie!
M. E. Breen creates a dark, unique world in which her characters and story develop as light creeps into the many mysteries of Darkwood. The writing is un-insulting to bright readers and challenges them with rich details, complex sentences, and the occasional SAT word. Our heroine is a young girl with special gifts who braves the dangers of Darkwood to survive, but in the process rescues more than just herself through courage, intellignece, and good friends.

A unique read that is both fun and challenging for the target reader.
Bought it for my 12 year old read-a-holic grandaughter for Christmas. But after reading just a few pages -- I can't put it down. This is a spunky heroine and I can't wait to find out how she escapes and then conquers the evil.
I started this book at my school and didn't get to finish it so I looked it up and got it I have read this book so many times and every time that I do I still get the thrill that it sends this is my very favorite book!!!!! 😀
Darkwood is a beautifully written book, full of believable characters, dark and spooky settings, and heroes who never let you down. The bad guys are perfectly bad, and the good guys are beautifully good, and the surprises are splendidly twisty. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, old-fashioned story about the differences between good and evil, and the thoughts and actions that make us strong. I can't wait to read it with my kids.
