I read a few reviews in some different sites before reading the book, and even though things like: 80's Dynasty-like soap opera, unlikable characters, cliched scenarios and lack of romance were descriptions that kept coming up, I still wanted to give it a try, because it is The Ward and that's what you do. Well, at this point I'm not even sure if I'll be reading anything else from her in the future, because in my opinion, those reviewers had it right. To me the book was too convoluted, too lengthy and even - surprisingly so - tedious at times. And I said surprisingly because there was a lot going on, abortions, cheating, alcoholism, storms, corporate crises, arrests, murders, etc etc and still I found myself skipping pages at some points.
I understand that as the 1st book of a series it has to set up the characters, the mood and the back-story for the future... but it was too much and too little at the same time, a lot of brand naming, wearisome decor deceptions and a certain amount of vapid commentary that achieved to portrait all the superficial dimension of the story but any of the substantial things that for me make a ROMANCE novel: emotions and passion. There was no actual focus (making the events, ultimately irrelevant) nor any strong resolution for the main couple at the end.
In conclusion, if you haven't been all that happy with The Ward's writing lately (aka The Shadows debacle), maybe you'll do yourself a favor by not reading this book, at least you'll spare yourself the frustration.

The Bourbon Kings JR Ward 9780451475268 Books Reviews
I knew this book was going to be different from any other JR Ward's work and I was excited to read it. I love her BDB series and her romance novels as Jessica Bird.
This one plays more like a Dynasty or a Falcon Crest soap opera if you will. We have a Bourbon empire, a despicable patriarch, an absent mother, and the siblings dealing with their own battle scars and broken spirits.
The first book features Jonathan Tulane "Lane" Bradford. He is the younger of the male siblings. When we first meet him he's in NYC gambling and staying on his best friend's couch. He has been there for two years. Only to leave NYC for his home estate, Easterly when someone dear to him is sick.
Lizzie King works as the main horticulturalist for the Bradford's estate. She fell in love with Lane two years ago, only to loose him. He hurt her deeply and she is not going to give him a second chance. This of course, doesn't last long. Their feelings for each other run too deep to have disappeared. Lane wants to fight for Lizzie but he might not be able to win her back with so much evil surrounding them.
~~
This is an interesting saga. The family makes dysfunctional look good. We have four siblings trying to survive the best they can.
I'm not too sure why Lane had to run away after he broke Lizzie's heart. I don't like that over the last two years he hasn't done anything productive with his life. He has spent his time drinking and gambling. I saw a few instances when he started to take control of his life and those glimpses gave me hope.
“There is no fight – I’m yours. If you want, here and now. Or later. A week, a month, years from now.”
I don't understand why Lizzie stayed employed by the Bradfords. If it was me, I would have said "Sayonara losers" a long time ago. No garden is good enough reason to be confronted with Lane's wife on a daily basis.
In regards to the other siblings
Gin, the only sister, is spoiled and never learned to take care of herself. Regardless of this, I liked her and felt sorry for her. But, I don't agree with her "way out" at all. What happened to her made me mad and upset. Keeping quiet is NEVER the answer.
Edward, the oldest brother is a broken soul and I immediately fell for him. He needed someone to love him deeply and help him overcome all his obstacles. He deserved happiness. For me, he was the most interesting character. I'm not sure who his HEA is. Sutton is definitely a contender.
Max is still missing in action. He was mentioned a few times and we saw a glimpse of him as a child, and Lane alluded to some of his darker side but nothing else except Tanesha Nyce asking about him. (HEA?).
“You’re the love of my life, whether you’re with me or not.”
Cliffhanger In a way yes. The story is not close to done.
4/5 Fangs
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - Epic story of a bourbon empire brought to its knees! This series isn't about one of the four Baldwine siblings in each book. It seems like we might have one couple highlighted but the author has particulars on each sibling. We have Max the troublemaker who stirred the pot, didn't take his punishment, and took off for good as an adult. Where, no one knows. The youngest son Lane is in love with the horticulturist for the vast home estate but got tricked into a marriage by his ex. Has he lost Lizzie for good when his ex Chantal continues to screw with his life? Gin, the little sister & spoiled brat, isn't dealing well with the possibility of losing her fortune since she hasn't worked a day in her life. Gin is the one I am very intrigued with! She pretty much ignores her daughter Amelia, screws any man she wants to poke at her one true love, lawyer Samuel T. When she is out of time & money is scarce she pours her heart out to Samuel T & he is incredibly cruel to her, believing she's playing him one last time. And then there is Edward, the oldest son who was kidnapped & tortured & left in a crippled state, now in charge of the horses on the estate. He is a shell of his former self & has to be hurt even more mentally at the thought of his father's involvement in all this. He also has a woman he has loved for years & doesn't feel worthy of her now that he has changed. These four grown children need to grow up & fast before their father screws them out of their bourbon legacy, but for some of the siblings they act like Scarlett O'Hara, clinging to their reputation & fighting the only way they know how. But Momma says it best - this is Lane's time, everything is falling into place for Lane to step up & take control of his destiny! Murder, sex, love, old Southern charm, betrayal - you get it all! I immediately bought book #2.
