It seems it is becoming harder, and harder, to find novels of the horror genre, that are as equally driven in delivering the fright factor, as they are in developing the characters. They seem to morph into gratuitous scenes of blood and guts, focusing on soliciting shock-value. And, if the characters aren't sufficiently fleshed-out---if there is no bond with them, then I have difficulty relating to their outcomes. Not true with Langan's story! She has succeeded in crafting and developing characters that we can relate to, while managing to provide a 4-star 'BOO' factor. Some may feel that we have, 'been there, done that,' with her premise, but Langan states her inspiration came from some of the greatest: The Haunting of Hill House, The Shining and Rosemary's Baby, to name a few; a time when horror stories were character driven; a time when those characters remained unforgettable. She added she hopes she has done well by them with her story. I believe her unique spin on all of these stories, combined, is a triumphant success. Well, almost---there are some flaws.
Audrey, the primary protagonist, is a fragile, psychologically damaged young Architect, with commitment issues, who moves into a steal-of-a-deal Manhattan apartment, The Breviary. She is seeking space from her boyfriend, and attempting to empower herself, in light of some serious emotional issues. She is carrying around enough baggage to fill a dozen Pullman suitcases, including OCD and a mom with debilitating mental illness. I grew to love her for her imperfections.
Langan sets us up with a suspenseful, atmospheric, supernatural thriller, as very strange things begin to take place, and a host of peculiar neighbors begin to unveil themselves. We're left to wonder if Audrey is experiencing a breakdown, or if these events are actually happening. Secondary characters effectively drive the plot. Jayne, the only other young tenant in The Breviary was engaging, and Sarub, Audrey's boyfriend, was endearing, in spite of some serious issues of his own. I thoroughly enjoyed these characters.
Langan does a great job describing her characters. In one scene, an intrusive neighbor accosts Audrey in the hallway. Langan describes this lady so well, I could actually see her through Langan's eyes, all the way to her crusty, fungus-ridden toenails. This is where the subtle creepy factor begins to pinch the nerves.
Build the door and they will come. Ah, yes---this is where I had issues. In a supernatural world, suspending disbelief is often required, but with a little more development in this area, I feel, that for the genre, this would have been a strong 5 star read. All said, I know I will be watching this author closely, and I plan to pick up her other novels, to date.

I wish that she would write more horror novels, as far as I am concerned, she is right up there Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Saul, and Bentley Little
Excellent book from a very talented writer. Highly recommended! Check out her novel, "The Keeper" as well.
I had read the mixed reviews of this book but the blurb intrigued me so I read the first chapter online and was really excited about reading the rest. I was sadly disillusioned and kept reading purely in the hope it would recapture what I'd thought was there in the beginning.
The story rambled and as another review says, was hard to tell if it was horror or a tale of a woman having a nervous breakdown. I wouldn't have minded either to be honest, I just like to know what it is I'm meant to be reading. The whole thing felt very self indulgent and rushed in parts. For me, it just never got going. I wanted to like it, I feel bad that I didn't.. but I didn't. I think of my books very personally and love to re read them over and over and over. I won't re read this book ever and sadly, I don't feel I can recommend it either. (Well except maybe to my ex - but I don't like him!!)
This is more than just a haunted house story. It's a haunted person story. Even more so, it's a haunted America, a haunted world story. It delves into mental illness, despair, and the constant need to fill the voids. We run from ourselves and hide in our corners, unaware that the corners we paint ourselves into are often the most haunted places of all. Sarah Langan delivers a horror story that doesn't jump at you, but instead slowly crawls under your skin and makes you squirm.
Just finished this e-book and I must say that I haven't read one this creepy in quite a long time. Being a true horror fan this tale really hit the spot. The story line though unique in its own right reminds me of 1977's "The Sentinel" Jeffrey Konvitz - about a creepy apartment building in Brooklyn Heights. I found myself drawn to the two main characters and felt myself giving them advice during certain situations, saying no don't do that, or do it this way and fast! For me forgetting your surroundings and being engulfed in all that creepiness is one of the main reasons for reading horror. I am looking forward to reading "The Keeper" and "The missing"
Glad to see a gem in the mostly male dominated genre of horror. Bravo Ms. Langan!
Overall a great, dare I say, creepy read!
Not the scary, horror-fest advertised, instead you get a compelling story with great, complex characters and a slow descent into madness. Like nothing you've probably read before, this is funny, tragic and very well-written, with a terrific climax and coda that made me want to read this author's other story. Highly recommend but again, not a "scary" novel.
I bought this book, despite hearing alot of negative things about it due to the fact that I absolutely LOVED langan's first two books. However, I simply did not enjoy this book at all. First of all, these characters just aren't likable. I have never found Langan to be great at writing characters, but in her previous books, they were serviceable and played the roles they needed to play. In Audrey's door, her character writing has holes shot through it due to the fact that almost absolutely nothing is happening for the entire first half of the book. Furthermore, the "paranormal" parts of the book aren't interesting and I just found the plot a real yawner. It took me quite a few days to make it through this stinker and I can not in good faith recommend this book to anyone, it just isn't good enough to recommend to fan's of haunted house books, nor is it good enough to recommend to fan's of Sarah's previous works. I'm hoping this was just a fluke and that her next novel will bring back the fun I had with The Keeper and The Missing.
