I picked up this book years ago at a local library and have been watching for it to be made into an ebook ever since. I didn't realize when I first read it years ago that it was a trilogy and I clearly remember finishing it right before going out to dinner with friends and telling them that I just finished reading a book that made me want to commit suicide or scream or something very dramatic (only kidding everyone). But it was a very, very sad and emotional and also a lovely read, and thankfully had sequels which I immediately ordered. I purchased the kindle version as soon as I saw them available, but have just gotten myself emotionally ready to read them again. Ah, I love Gracelin. I love the beauty of the family relationships and those of friends, their depth, commitment, honesty. This is such a heart achingly beautiful novel. I can believe it doesn't have a larger following than it does. It's definitely one of my favorites of all time.Tags : Leaving Ireland [Ann Moore] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Leaving Ireland Ann Moore 9780451207074 Books Reviews
This book continues Gracelin O'Malley's search for a better life for her & her daughter by coming to the United States in search of her brother. It details the harshness of traveling across the Atlantic by ship in the early 1800's. Gracelin was fortunate because the Irish community in New York provides her with the means to support herself & her daughter. Historically, the Irish were shunned during these years being denied work & housing because of their nationality which caused them to form their own communities, lending support to other Irish immigrants. This book also expresses the strength of character required for a single woman to survive the harsh, male dominated society of the early to mid 1800's.
Book 2 was every bit as enjoyable as the first. However...I will give it just a bit of time before going into the 3rd book. This series does a lot to educate those people who are not familiar with the horrible years of famine that plagued the Irish people. Nor or many aware of how horribly the immigrants were treated - both on the immigrant ships and worse yet on American soil once they arrived. Only through perseverance, were they able to succeed and even become valuable contributing citizens. Who of us does not have a drop of Irish blood in them - not many, I wager.
Try it.....you will enjoy the book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series!!! Read them one after another & was sad to have the saga end. Great story telling & wonderful characters. The ending became predictable, but I couldn't wait to read all that was to happen before the inevitable!!! And I learned a lot about the Irish famine. Had no idea it lasted for years. Great historical fiction. I hope Ms. Moore continues writing!!!
A nove of how the potato famine bought the Irish to America, the horrors of their ordeal, the hard ness of being British subjects, makes us (or should make us thankful) that we fought and gained out freedom from England; T'hey were treated very badly by their landlords, had no government to protect them from the injustice of these people. After they came here, (alive, but barely) they made great strides to gain respect from the Americans, and for themselves. I enjoyed they series, and would suggest these for high school students. The historical fact is something most young people of today know nothing about.

I HAVE READ ALL THREE OF THE GRACE OMALLEY TRILOGY AND WOULD FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CHOOSE MY FAVORITE. LEAVING IRELAND , THE SECOND BOOK DEALS WITH THE HARROWING VOYAGE TO AMERICA. MOORE PUTS SO MUCH DETAIL INTO HER BOOKS,YOU FEEL YOU ARE THERE. I FOUND NOT ONLY THE VOYAGE BUT HOW THE IRISH COMMUNITY HELPED EACH OTHER COPE AND HELP ;EACH OTHER. AGAIN AS IN ALL THREE BOOKS OF THE TRILOGY, FAMILY UNITY, A TOUGHNESS OF SPIRIT SHINES THROUGH. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED ALL THREE AND CREDIT MOORE WITH HELPING PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS FOR THE IRISH POPULATION TO ENDURE SURVIVING THE POTATO FAMINE. ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE BOOKS ON IRISH HISTORY I'VE READ.
With the horrors of the famine getting worse Gracellin decides to go to America to find her brother. Due to the rigors of the trip she leaves behind someone very important to her and her daughter. Her friends help her book passage on an American ship in first class where she and her daughter will have regular meals and be above the deck. Most Irish on the coffin ships lived below decks in steerage for the trip across the Atlantic. The ship sailed late in the season and the crossing was very difficult. The steward changed Gracellin reservation and she ended up in steerage the cook doled out her rations daily so she had food. The ships Captain was a kind man who befriended Gracellin and her daughter. When a deadly fever struck the ship the doctor refused to help the people In steerage until the Captain ordered him to stay in the hold until everyone was cured. When they arrived in New York Gracellin realized it would be impossible to find her brother. She found cheap lodgings and set out to find a job. The saga continues don't miss the third book.
This book is one of three. It was the most interesting and historical book about the Irish in Ireland during the 1800's. I couldn't put these books down. The story is about a woman by the name of Gracelyn O'Malley and her family. It follows her from her childhood and all the way to America. I loved, loved, loved this trilogy.
