If You're Lucky Yvonne Prinz Books
Grade: A-Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. When seventeen-year-old schizophrenic George's brother dies surfing, she becomes suspicious of his friend Fin, who charms his way into Lucky's old life including his girlfriend and her parents' hearts. Convinced that Lucky has been killed by Fin, George decides going off her meds is the only way to solve the "murder".
IF YOU'RE LUCKY is by far one of the best books with a schizophrenic protagonist I've read. Yvonne Prinz did her homework and created a vulnerable and strong character in George and readers are privy to her descent into delusions and hallucinations as her condition deteriorates without her meds. I wasn't sure which parts of her narration were reliable. Was Fin the good guy everyone but she believed, or was George, in the midst of a schizophrenic episode, the only one who could see the truth?
Part mystery, part story of mental illness compounded by grief IF YOU'RE LUCKY is beautifully written. George's voice feels so raw and authentic as she becomes less clear the longer she has been without her meds. Prinz does a remarkable job showing the story.
My only criticism is the ending. While it wasn't rushed, I would have liked more closure for one part of the mystery, and less about a new character.
THEMES: schizophrenia, mental illness, grief, family, friendship, mystery
IF YOU'RE LUCKY is a must read for those interested in mental health, grief or an old fashion did he or didn't he.

If You're Lucky Yvonne Prinz Books Reviews
A real page turner. Loved it.
I've read all of Ms Prinz's books and find them both clever and insightful. But this one is different. While it is clever and insightful, it is also riveting. I couldn't put it down and read it cover to cover in one sitting. The characters are well developed and the description of the town of False Bay made me want to visit on my next weekend off. But what really got me in this book is the unsure feeling I got as I read it. The slow descent of Georgia made me wonder what was real and what was imagined. And the subtlety of the changes in character (as true character was revealed) was brilliant! I believed every word and finished the book shaken but also satisfied.
Brave and brilliant and real! A must read!
This book kept me interested, and like the main character it was hard to know what was real or not, which put a great twist on a crime story.
'If You're Lucky' is a thriller from inside the broken mind of a teenage girl. Though I roared through this masterly crafted story, it's stuck with me. It really made me think. I found myself questioning my own black and white assumptions about mental illness, stretching them into shades of grey. A rare find.
The writing is excellent, the characters ring true and the mystery keeps you going to the end. I highly recommend this book for lovers of thrillers as well as those who want a tasty introduction to the genre. I'm an old lady, but I've bought copies for the young adults in my life because I know they will enjoy the story as well.
This novel is just extraordinary. How do we know what is real and what isn't? How does that shape our view of the world and of ourselves? Prinz is a gorgeous writer (I was underlining sentences) and the book is essential reading for both adults and YA.
